The basic requirements for the inclusion of the journal in Web of Science

All Journal submissions through the Master Journal List™ and the Publisher Portal will be suspendedhttps://clarivate.com/webofsciencegroup

First of all, to evaluate the journal for possible inclusion in Web of Science (WoS), the Clarivate Analytics editorial staff should familiarize with at least three consecutive current issues of the journal, and / or get free access to the publication electronically. Journals are included or excluded from the database biweekly in the process of their assessing and selecting.

When evaluating the journals for inclusion in the database, numerous factors are taken into account, from qualitative to quantitative ones. Here are the main ones:

Basic standards for the journal:

Timeliness of the journal publication (compliance with the declared periodicity)

Compliance with international publishing standards: informative title of the publication, visual presentation of the article names and annotations, complete bibliographic information for all references, full address for each author

Availability of publication in English (at least, the availability of English-language bibliographic information), references must necessarily be in Latin

The presence of peer review institution

Providing, where possible, information on the source of research funding in each article

Content of the journal is examined for increasing the existing database (new trends).

International composition of authors, editors, members of the editorial board.

Citation analysis for both the journal itself and individual authors.

Basic principles of the publication and promotion of scientific journal (based on the Clarivate Analytics workshop)

Careful study of opponents and selection of best practices

Strategic choice of scientific field

Active search of influential researchers in this field and their invitation to cooperation

Better services for authors, than at opponents’ one

Creation and promotion of the journal's image in the media

1. Careful study of opponents and selection of best practices

  • Web of Science provides an opportunity for thematic search and identifying the journals that publish materials on a selected topic (Analyze results - after a thematic search for publications)
  • It makes sense to select several journals that show good results (indexed in foreign databases) and apply their model (partially or completely) to your journal (the number of articles, periodicity, author composition, marketing, availability (доспупнисть это доступность?))
  • Thematic search in the Web of Science also makes it possible to evaluate which areas of your knowledge are the most urgent, do not lose their relevance and are developing now (this is evidenced by the number of citations)
  • Where there is competition (websites on the Internet, scientific databases, indexes): there must be you!

2. Strategic choice of scientific field (subject)

  • When choosing, one should be guided by the data from the indices on the natural (JCR Science Edition) and social (JCR Social Science Edition) sciences in the Journal Citation Report.
  • If the subject is at the intersection of sciences, one should search in both indices. Detailed description of the specific subject (area of research, keywords, etc.) can be found in the Scope Note option.
  • One should make a list of journals that write on an interesting subject (Subject Category)
  • Analyze the subjects that are discussed in these journals
  • When preparing a special issue of the journal, one should use JCR and Web of Science to search for journals and authors that are published on the subject of your special issue
  • One should analyze various bibliometric indicators: impact factor (IF), 5-year impact factor and immediate impact factor (Immediacy IF) - the so-called efficiency index.

3. Active search of influential researchers in this field and their invitation to cooperation

  • You should conduct a thematic search in the Web of Science and evaluate which authors are the most influential- they have the largest number of citations
  • You also should analyze all the available information about each of these authors (place of work, address, ResearcherID) and try to attract them to cooperation: post their articles in your journal, suggest co-authors, reviewers, join the editorial board and so on.

4. Better services for authors, than at opponents’ one

  • Access to a wider audience in a new region for these authors
  • The ability to offer their works to an audience around the world. If these authors are also editors, they have the opportunity to attract new authors to their journal
  • Assistance in distribution of information about the author at the university, which publishes your journal: an invitation to make a presentation at a conference or lecture for teachers and students

5. Creation and promotion of the journal's image in the media

  • Correct marketing strategy: an interesting web page of the journal, links to it from university websites, industrial companies, scientific databases
  • Use social networks such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube to distribute and popularize your subject: interviews with authors, publication of research results, etc.
  • Indexing in leading scientific databases, archives and repositories
  • If possible, provide open access to your journal
  • A good image of the journal may interest international publishers in its acquisition

6. Attentive approach to the selection of articles and professional correspondence with the authors

  • Communication with all authors (potential authors in future, current authors, and those that were refused) is the basis for building strong ties with them
  • Qualitative selection - strict adherence to high quality standards of research and content of articles
  • The standards for the article format and the bibliography should be clearly spelled out, and all the authors have to comply with these requirements (articles templates accepted in various journals can be found at http://www.endnote.com/ - the support & services tab)
  • Subject of articles should be extremely relevant.
